Here is another 3 part series in our gratitude challenges. Today’s challenge is to be grateful for the moon. I love writing this blog, because my google searches are so much fun! Today has been a lot of searches on what we know about the moon, so I’m grateful for the education. Did you know that the moon has its own wikipedia page? It is quite a fascinating read and probably more than you’d ever want to know about the moon.

Fun fact: The Moon is significantly smaller than Earth, with about one-quarter the diameter, approximately 27% of Earth’s width, and about 1/120th the mass, containing only about 2% of Earth’s volume. Here’s a lovely image to get you thinking:

The moon controls the oceans’ tides – the ebb and flow of the water that keeps our world going.

While the reality of the moon up close show it isn’t a particularly attractive -cold, grey, dusty, I prefer to be grateful for the aura or essence of the moon – the romanticism and fictional ties to the moon. I remember a fun sci-fi series called Space: 1999, which was based on the premise of the moon being separated from the earth. I LOVED that show. Luckily for us, 1999 came and went without fiction becoming reality. I am grateful for the show’s creative idea of having a space station on the moon and noodling with what that might mean for our world.

La Bella Luna! Love has blossomed during walks on a moonlit night. Songs have been written about the moon (Blue moon). A scary movie is made even more scarier when the camera pans up to a moonless night. OR….when werewolves come to life during a full moon (Gosh that was one of the ickier scenes from An American Werewolf in London.

Hopefully tonight you can look up and be grateful for that big rock…and enjoy this website I just discovered that tracks the phase of the moon.

I took this picture with my phone while walking Mavis the other night.
