My day in Croatia was an all day excursion (from 9 – 5) in the Croatian countryside. The first part of the day was a visit to the Vučedol Culture Museum. This museum showcases the findings at the Vučedol archaelogical dig. It was equally as impressive as the dig in Bulgaria. The location was first inhabited around 6,000 B.C. and was inhabited through the whole of prehistory. Doesn’t that blow your mind? At the end of the museum that had this great graph that shows how civilizations were developing across the world! Isn’t this crazy?!
They can tell these people could identify constellations. They lived in dwellings. They worked with metals. It’s amazing what they can find out from these excavations.
Our guide provided the Croatian perspective on the Serbian-Croatian war. It’s interesting to me that Wikipedia calls it the Croatian War of Independence. The perspective I was given is that Serbia was the aggressor. Milosevic sounded like a real jerk. That’s the nicest way to say it. Croatian civilians and hospitals were targeted. Rotten behavior. We stopped at the water tower in Vukovar that has come to be a symbol of the conflict.
It was lunch time and I got to spend lunch with a Croatian family! In this small village four families opened their homes up to us for a home-cooked meal. My new cruise friend Charlie and I went together (your other option was to eat in a family restaurant). This may have been the highlight of the cruise. We got to meet a family. I got to play soccer with their foster children. We drank their homemade liquor (whoo -one shot glass and I was flying high).
One more family run museum that showcased the old way of living (making bricks by hand, etc.) and then it was back to the boat for…70’s night. This wasn’t as fun as the DJ night, but I definitely enjoyed the costumes folks were daring to wear.
Next stop is Budapest!
In my top 5 places I’d like to go, looks amazing Mary!
Looks like fun!
