Finally! I am re-starting the gratitude challenges. It’s been awhile and frankly I have missed writing them. They help me to focus on all the good in my life.

For the first gratitude challenge of 2026, let us take a moment to be thankful for the kitchen workhorse – the refrigerator.

Prior to its existence, the only option for keeping things cool was an icebox, a large hole in the backyard where a chunk of an iceberg sat and slowly melted.

We’ve come a long way baby.

Whether yours is a side by side, counter depth, subzero, amana, or some other concoction, refrigerators provide a lot of flexibility to our lives (and keep us in good health by refrigerating things that need to stay cold).

My relatively new fridge stopped working on December 23rd. I’m still working toward a resolution with Samsung. They came out three or four times before throwing in the towel. It’s hard for me to believe a refrigerator only lasts 5 years, but here I am shopping for a replacement.

I am incredibly grateful for my Kitchen-Aid fridge, which is in the garage. That trooper is over 20 years old and keeps on going…which has made this cooling debacle more manageable.

Some pics of the new (currently dead) fridge and the original! If I could hug that Kitchen-Aid, I would!!!
