I was going to end the gratitude challenge with Indian food last week…but I felt compelled to conclude with one of my favorite foods – Sushi. My record was eating it for lunch and dinner for 3 days in a row. I’m grateful I was brave enough to try out several decades ago in Dallas Texas. I remember staying up the night because I was worried I was going to get some sort of poisoning.

I’m grateful to the sushi chefs who know how to slice and dice it just right. I’m grateful to my friend Jen taking me to a snooty place in Los Angeles where the menu had written on it ‘do NOT ask for extra soy sauce or condiments. The chef has prepared the sushi exactly how it should be eaten’ or something like that.

I’m grateful to my sister who will tolerate going with me to a sushi place even though it’s not her favorite, but she knows how much I like it.

Now by no means am I a sushi snob or connoisseur. I have never tried quail eggs on a sushi roll. I saw a guy order that in Buckhead one night and I gagged a little bit. I never acquired a taste for uni. I like the basics: salmon, white tuna, eel, crab, yellowtail, shrimp tempura. And I’m grateful for that – I am comfortable staying in my lane for sure.

I am ending this collection of gratitude challenges with a bonus challenge to you to say thank you to your chef – whether he or she is slinging hash or creating a souffle, they work hard and most have a passion for food that is beautiful to experience.
