Hopefully an easy challenge for you.
Up to a certain age (probably mid 20s), upcoming birthdays are greatly anticipated with excitement. And then the day arrives with great fanfare – cake, ice cream, balloons, flowers, gifts, cards, maybe even a party. With great joy we announce to the world another successful turn around the sun!
Somewhere in the 30s-50s, the feelings change. Birthdays are approached with trepidation. As wrinkles and grey hair appear and parts begin to sag, we might feel a bit of dread as we approach a milestone year, especially when the birthday cards now might include a tombstone!
Following this ‘dread’ birthday phase another phase occurs , I imagine when you are 60s +, when you’re just thankful to be alive and healthy-ish and mostly in one piece.
I suggest if you’re in the era of fearing or dreading birthdays, that you leap forward or backward into the positive phase. Celebrate that you’re alive. Smash that cake with abandonment. We get older whether we like it or not, so we might as well enjoy what we can. Live in the present moment and love the friends and family who are with you in person or in spirit. Life on this earth is short and precious, celebrate the time you have.
Every day is a glorious day given to us. I’m going to keep on circling this sun while God let’s me. And next year, I think I will put on a pink frou-frou dress and buy one of those small smash cakes, just to experience it!
