I hold onto things. I am staring at a miniature baseball bat from a company event in 2013. It is resting in a large glass beer mug from a company event in 2016. I’m no longer at the company, so why am I holding on to this swag? Today’s gratitude challenge is a different type of challenge. It’s Marie Kondo-esque.
Today find something in your house or car or office space that you’ve been holding onto, thank it for being part of your life and then let it go!
The actual step (of her 5 step program, which sounds something like a recovery progam) is:
Discard what doesn’t spark joy: Only keep items that bring you joy. To determine if an item sparks joy, hold it and consider how it makes you feel. If it doesn’t bring positive memories or align with your goals, let it go.
When discarding an item, Kondo suggests taking a moment to appreciate what it has given you. For example, you might express gratitude for what a sentimental item has taught you
I’ve kept these items because I am sentimental. They represent a time where I was part of a core group of leaders who created a stellar service team at a software startup (nice alliteration). The company has evolved into something else as have I.
And so I let go gratefully. May it bring joy to someone else at Goodwill (and not land in a landfill).
Good luck de-cluttering!
