It’s a blessing and curse to find that life goes on. For your positive life events (first love, marriage, first dance, birth of a child, first big promotion, first major accomplishment, etc.), the happiness is so euphoric at times that you want to freeze that moment and stay there forever. I loved the image from Harry Potter where memories were stored so that you could come back to them and watch them again and again. But life goes on…love may falter, children grow up. For the negative life events, the exact opposite feeling is true – the pain of a heartache or grief from the passing of a loved one often feels like it won’t end. But life goes on. People come in and out of your lives. The transitive nature of life can be discouraging.

I’m searching for my new purpose…I’ve now been consulting about 4 months…still figuring out what that looks like. There’s so much I haven’t figured out. I get frustrated and really mad at myself. In my head I’m saying ‘Hurry up, Mary! Figure this out.’

And then I pause… because

  1. It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey. It’s about my life evolving as the world evolves and my family and friends evolve. We’re all interconnected and changing.
  2. Because life goes on, worrying about the future or fretting about the past serves no purpose. It is essential to stay in this moment. Today. Enjoy and love the friends and family who are here with me now. Be grateful for my life (in whatever state it is in) and my body (in whatever state it is in, too) right now. It’s not perfect and it never will be. I’ll never have it all figured out, because life goes on and changes daily.

When I talk about finding my purpose, I’m searching for what defines me, what do I value and how do I add value. Many of us determine our value by the job or duties we perform, whether in a professional capacity or as we relate to others (sister, aunt). If those ‘titles’ go away, how do you define yourself. How do you find your purpose?

Years ago I bought The Purpose Driven Life…as have so many other people. It’s a huge industry, trying to figure out why we’re here, what we are made for.

The website (link above) is super nifty…but with your permission, I’ll revisit this book (shoot I’m not sure if I ever finished it). Hopefully some of you will join me in this endeavor.
