Skagway was not my favorite port. I think it is because it really felt like a tourist trap. Or maybe I chose the wrong excursion. There was a train ride excursion, but I’m saving that for a train either across the Canadian Rockies or in Alaska (to see Denali)…so I skipped that option and joined several others on a ride to a Suspension Bridge in Canada. On the way we had a bear sighting! Little black bear was foraging along the side of the road. I was happy to see him…and happy to be safe inside a bus. Bears are big!
On to O Canada! Given the current frosty feelings between Canada and the US, I figured we might be given some grief by the border patrol. No problems at all. Apparently there’s a waiting list for the gig! Anyway. The suspension bridge is pretty and bonus points, they stamped my passport. I think that might be illegal, but my passport is renewing this year, so I risked it. Another bonus point, someone took a picture of me – so now I have a full body shot. This is the one draw back of solo travel, lots of selfies, never a full pic.
We did stop at a glacier lake on the way back. And another bear sighting. So that was kinda neat. The trip concluded with an all you can eat salmon bake at Liarsville. And let me just be frank and say this was lame. Salmon was not good and there just wasn’t anything to the ‘town’. It was a cute idea but not for me. All I was willing to eat was a 1/2 piece of the salmon. I figured the rest of Skagway was as touristy, so I just took the bus back to the boat. Probably my only not-good excursion.
Happy hour with the solo gang and dinner at Compass Rose – I chose a NY strip which was quite good after the disappointing salmon at Liarsville.
Next stop is Juneau and whale watching!
