My friend Marla sent me this image from instagram, which is the inspiration for today’s blog. While I can be a very serious person, especially when trying to make a good impression, I am always up for silliness and frivolity. There’s either a sitcom or musical running through my head at all times…and both of those genres involve silliness…and I guess frivolity too.

Are you serious-minded? Often times we incorrectly believe the approach to a problem is to go heads down, locked in until a solution is produced. The truth is that your brain needs silliness to inspire innovation. It is a HARD thing to step away for silly time when you have a deadline bearing down on you, but it really may be the best thing for you…and the project.

To me, silliness and frivolity can’t be planned for. There is spontaneity to them. Rather than a list of silly things I plan to do in 2024, I’ll provide, in no particular order, a year in review of 2023’s silliness and frivolity.

  • At a work function in New Orleans, I high-kicked in a parade
  • I wore my T-Rex costume…multiple times
  • I wore a crocodile costume to choir practice
  • I took a nutty solo trip through Eastern Europe and made some friends
  • I bought a ceramic seal that serves no purpose but to make me smile
  • I made home-made mayonnaise
  • I took multiple road trips with Mavis
  • I went to Buc-ees at 11 pm on a Saturday night to see what the big deal was
  • I took my niece to see Ed Sheeran
  • I joined Rosie at Disney for a long weekend
  • I made lime green jello dip (which while silly, was disgusting)
  • I flew first class on two International trips (burned through some miles, but definitely worth it).

In reviewing this list, I’m starting to think maybe I’m not as serious as I think I am??
