Today is my parent’s wedding anniversary. My brother James and sister Sarah remembered. I’m sure my brother Thomas remembered and just didn’t reach out. I always got confused exactly which day was their anniversary. I knew their birthdays but for some reason I couldn’t get their anniversary date properly implanted in my head.
Mom joined the Army in 1959 as a nurse to see the world. She didn’t get very far. After basic training in San Antonio, she was stationed at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Georgia. She quickly caught the eye of my dad, who was a physician there. It was a whirlwind romance. They were married on December 5, 1959 at the post chapel. She and my dad ran his medical practice for 44 years. She was the nurse, accountant, laundress, office manager. Essentially she did everything so that dad could focus on doing what he did best, being a physician. When my dad won the Laureate Physician of Georgia in 1998 by the American College of Physicians, he said ‘You can’t spell Laureate without Laura.’ That’s just about the sweetest compliment he ever gave.
I know I have their wedding picture somewhere in the house, but I can’t find it. For now, I’ll post the picture that I believe is from her engagement announcement. That announcement is somewhere in the house, too. I think I need to do some organizing…
Here’s my mom, dad, my sister and I on Sarah’s wedding day in 2006.
