God is watching over you! What comfort that must bring to you – during times of sorrow and tribulation but also during times of joy and happiness
A song of ascents.
1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.3 He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.5 The Lord watches over you—
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.7 The Lord will keep you from all harm—
Psalm 121
he will watch over your life;
8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.
How many self-help books do you own? There is a plethora of choices available on Amazon. What if instead of looking to ourselves for help, we look to God? He wants a relationship with you. He wants you to lean on Him in good times as well as bad.
Mendelssohn’s choral piece has been running through my head all morning. God speaks to me through music, so when I have a song stuck in my head, I pause what I’m doing to figure out what God is trying to convey to me. In this case, I believe that God wants me to share not only the song from Mendelssohn’s Elijah, but also the scripture behind the song, which is Psalm 121. I find the combination of scripture and music soothing to my soul.
In these trying times, we’re all looking for comfort. You can’t help but feel anxious as you read about wars and diseases and inflation and and and. In listening to this song and reading the Psalm, an image comes to my mind – that of a mother singing a lullaby to her fretful baby comes to mind. “There is no need to worry. I am watching you. Rest easy. Go to sleep, knowing that you are safe.”
We are all children of God. In this psalm he is offering comfort, should we accept it, so that we can rest.
Dear Lord,
Thank you for watching over me.
I am your humble servant.
Amen.
Here is a lovely performance by the Michael O’Neal Singers. I’ve had the privilege to sing with them in the past. If you’re singing in the Atlanta area, you should consider auditioning. If you live in Atlanta, you should definitely consider coming to a performance.
