A few nights ago I had a lovely dinner at Ippolito’s with my friend Angela. Somewhere in the evening we talked about the cruise I’m going on by myself. She and so many others are very excited for me and tell me it will be a great trip. All I can see is this wall of ‘LOSER TRAVELING ALONE’ that is causing some apprehension. Between us we came up with advice for me and now you.
- Consider yourself married to adventure – whether that adventure is eating dinner by yourself in downtown Roswell, going to the museum alone or floating on the Danube river. Each one of these activities is its own adventure! I can be the Indiana Jones of Atlanta.
- Open up – It is important to remember that, literally in this case, we are all in the same boat – meeting new people in a foreign land for this trip. Be willing to share and be willing to let others open up to you.
- Get your story straight. One of the items I struggle with is my new ‘who am I’ spiel for when folks ask you ‘Tell me a little bit about you’. I had a pretty good answer for this in a work setting but now that I’m semi-retired, I’m not quite sure what to say. Since most conversations start out this way, it’s important to have something prepared in your back pocket.
I’ll let you know how my marriage to adventure progresses. Hopefully there will be a very long honeymoon phase! Cheers!
