A song has been stuck in my head ALL morning, so I figured I would write about it as part of the gratitude challenge. Flashback to my junior year and Riverwood High school’s production of Godspell. The song was written from text from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Of course I googled this morning and found out it’s actually from Hair (but still is text from Shakespeare). I have no idea how it landed in our production, but I can hear Mr. Mason’s tenor voice singing it. I believe Gretchen LaBudde sang this in a trio during a scene change. Shout out to Mr. Mason and Ms. Vicki Ferguson for including me in the cast. I thoroughly enjoyed performing in the show and felt I grew exponentially as a person. They believed in me and so I began to believe in myself. I definitely enjoy theatre as a creative outlet. I enjoy being in shows and seeing shows produced professionally or via community theatre.
What piece of work is a man, how noble in reason,
Shakespeare
how infinite in faculties, in form and moving,
how express and admirable in action, how like an angel in apprehension,
how like a god! The beauty of the world. The paragon of animals
Our production was several decades ago, but I knew all the words.
Isn’t it funny how some things stick with you? Likewise I can hear Mr. Ralph Gavett working on our Latin conjugations.
Flash forward to the present – In choir we recently had to memorize a piece for our Patriotic concert…and you should have heard the grumblings! And you should see the cheat sheets that folks created to get through Amazing Grace’s verses.
Today’s challenge is instead of grumbling, let’s be grateful for our ability to memorize. And know that it isn’t in one ear and out the other. Memorized text (especially when put to song or movement) stay with you…and bubble up years later in life.
Have you got anything memorized from years ago that you can still recite?
I still know all the states in alphabetical order thanks to a song we did in 3rd grade, totally get it!
